THE WEATHER WAS OVERCAST, but that didnât keep a crowd from gathering outside the hotel Ondrea and Garrick stayed in. Fortunately, Garrick thought to take their luggage out to the car before they ate breakfast. At breakfast, they discussed going back to not one, but two state lines to take the pictures they forgot. Garrick estimated it would take most of the day to make it back to their current starting point, but it would be worth it. Ondrea needed all the points she could get, and maybe theyâd pick up a state flag or two along the way.
âReady?â he asked after they finished eating.
âReady,â Ondrea answered. She smiled, walked through the door he opened for her, and accepted the first stuffed fox a young girl handed to her. She pleasantly greeted several people, and accepted two more foxes, before a reporter got close enough. As usual, he shoved a microphone in her face, something she was beginning to really hate.
âIs it true Adison didnât pay her rent?â
âThatâs just silly,â Ondrea answered. âAdison can afford to buy and sell that New York City hotel at least three or four times over, and she is very meticulous about paying her bills.â
âWhat about her old boss? He says Adison is...â
Another reporter interrupted, âIs Yvette really frigid?â
Ondrea wrinkled her brow. âHow would I know?â
At the next question, it was Ondrea who interrupted, âThank you for asking. Yes, itâs true, the game has started again, and we need to...â People seemed to be inching closer and closer. Another fox appeared right in front of her, as still more questions were shouted.
âPlease move back,â she pleaded. It was no use. People were shoving, trying to hand her the foxes theyâd brought, and she couldnât seem to stop them. Someone yelled, a woman screamed, and another man shouted. By the time Garrick put his arm around her and tried to draw her away from the people, Ondrea was nearly in tears.
As quickly as he could, he got her back inside the hotel and out of sight.
Alarmed as well as annoyed, she let all the foxes drop out of her arms and let Garrick hold her until she stopped shaking. âI hate this game!â
âItâs a lot more tedious than I supposed.â He released her, bent down and picked up the foxes. âWhy donât you wait at the back door and Iâll bring the car around.
âOkay.â She managed half a smile before she asked, âGarrick?â
He picked up the last fox and then looked at her. âYes?â
âWhere is the back door?â
He helped her find it, told her to wait right there, and then went back out the front door. In the hotel parking lot were several police and emergency vehicles. As far as he could tell, no one was being helped into an ambulance, but something had definitely happened. Garrick hurried to the car, drove around back, picked Ondrea up, and then headed out of town.
